Inspired by...Dina Wakley

It has been awhile since I did an "Inspired by" post so here we are! I have taken a few classes with Dina Wakley. I love her products from stamps, to stencils, & now her newish luscious paints. The stamps & stencils on this page are all Dina's. This art journal page is for DLP wk#5.  Here are the prompts:

The Blank Page and How to Face It!
January 31
Art Challenge:  Under Paper (paper on your work table that gets all inky while you work)
Journal Prompt:  What Lies Beneath?

I started this page with foil & washi tape from my desk and added scrapes of Dina's acrylic paint, scratching in it to create some texture. Lots of layers of color here using Dina's products. Once the paint was dry I added my orange leaves using a light layer of paint with stencils. I love how this creates a transparent look & you can see the other layers under neath it. Stamping with archival or white paint and more stencil work. Dina's silhouette stamp was done on tissue paper-one of my favorite techniques.
To finish it off came my tag, it had scrap paint already on it. I came up with my own quote to fit the journal prompt, printed it on tissue paper and did a touch of sewing. Lastly I added my scrap stars to the layout- done. Love it!!! Thanks to Dina for creating the cool toys to play with! You can find her blog http://dinastamps.typepad.com/

SDC #183 Tag

Today I am playing in the weekly challenge over on the Stampotique Designers Challenge. #183 is to do an unbirthday card. I decided to do a tag. In my quest to use up stash items I started with some Prima packaging.
There was already some paint on the tag so I just spritzed it up with Distress Sprays. The "Raindrops" were heat embossed using 2 different colors. Cutie pie "moustache monster" was stamped on a subtle background paper. Underneath the way cool Bo Bunny film strip is washi tape which doesn't translate on camera. My fav- "ribbon border#2" was stamped on the edges, originally I heat embossed it but the color didn't show up so I fixed it by stamping over using archival ink. Adding the umbrella from "relaxin" as always on the ground cause I never use an umbrella. If you haven't had a chance you MUST check out the Stampotique blog hop here. There is some amazing inspiration & 50 new stamp releases which is awesome!!!! There are quite a few that I NEED!!! Especially Kate cranes new ones, Frances, Magda, Arwen.... oh heck I need a ton.

Creative Roll

Well I have been on a creative roll lately-love it! Attempting to stick with a few classes and challenges is paying off as I am having fun art journaling my face off. Helps that we have had a week of school/activity cancellation due to snow & bitter cold! For a change I have blog potential like crazy & can't keep up.
Cut to Inspiration Wednesday with Donna Downey.
Here is my take on Week 2-
I had great fun playing on this one! Also using stuff for my stash which is always productive. One of the things that drives me crazy is the school will send home a form with "please fill out immediately" the due date being the next day. As if I just sit by the homework folder waiting to fill out forms and rush them back at the speed of light. Really is it that much of a crisis? I tore this off the top of the form & it makes me giggle when I see it.
Added a piece from a Trader Joe flyer - "bouncy berries boiled" say that 10x fast. The paint I used is iridescent and goes from grey to blue when the page catches the light-cool. About to play more as Winter Storm Pandora dumps a boat load of snow- stay warm & get arty!

Viva Las Vegastamps Feb. Challenge

I had so much fun making this art journal page! Ever have that crafting thing where you just can't stop adding more & more but then you love it? That is what this page was all about. You can check out the VLVS challenge for Feb. here.
This is the prompt;
We'd like to prompt you this month with rainbows, ROYGBIV, diecuts, distressed, rip, torn, mended, stitches, staples, repairs, circles, watercolor, color guide, color wheel, fine arts, painterly, hues and more.

There is a lot going on with this page but I felt the challenge warranted it.  I've used a ton of VLVS on this- the clock, stitching, coffee ring, the wings on the bird are the head of a weird looking cool vulture stamp.

Cool & funky. The page started with glass bead gel & once dry I spritzed with Dylusions. This made the beads really stand out & created a cool texture where the gel was scraped on. The clock & tag were spritzed with Glimmer mist and stamped on. The cool chicken wire is from Want2scrap & embossed with shabby enamel. Coffee rings are gold embossed and just add that needed metallic look.

I really had to stop myself from adding more cause I just wanted to keep going!!! Go check out VLVS they are awesome.

SDC #182 Love & Hearts

Playing with stamps today- Stampotique design challenge #182.

The challenge in honor of Valentines is to play with love & hearts. I made a cute project life card inspired by  Kate Cranes Journal Soup 2 . I signed up awhile ago and finally got to play while watching one of the videos. Lots of great teaching in this video so far. This card is definitely inspired by Kate's class.
I didn't have a lot of heart type stamps as they are not a favorite shape of mine- I know -gasp. The 3 hearts on the top of the card are from the Welcome Door stamp. I wanted the cute "Little Hoo Hoo" stamp image to be translucent so the layers under would show, from underneath so I used tissue paper. The sentiment is one of my favs- from "Bar Code Text" by France Papillon. Definitely need more of her stamps!!!

Documented Life Project #4

This was a fun one! I had all kinds of ideas. Amazing what a few weeks can do for your mojo. This is the challenge for Documented Life Project week 4.

Art Challenge:  Writing
Journal Prompt:  Words with Friends

One of the things I decided early on is I would label my pages on my blog & on the Art to 5th site numerically, by weekly numbers. On each page I stamp the actual date the art journal page is finished. I think I will also put the challenges, typed in the front of the journal with the week numbers. I left the first couple of pages open for a title page...

On to the page. Starting with the art challenge "writing", deciding to make an embossed resist background. I took various background writing stamps and embossed them with clear emboss powder. Once that was set and cool the fun began. I used the relatively new Ranger distress sprays and sprayed generously letting them dry fairly well then taking a baby wipe to clean off the excess, letting the resist show clearly.
Now for the 2nd part of the prompt- "Words with Friends". I printed out quotes from my besties "scrap escape" weekend, coloring the quote pieces with distress inks & gluing them down. Next came some paper cut-outs and my title, stamped from THoltz Tall texts. I really like how this page turned out-the colors are vibrant and the embossed writing sketchy cool.

SDC#181

The challenge this week over at Stampotique is to use citrus colors. Here is my take on the challenge:
Lots of fun on this page. My favorite parts are the glitter glass in the sunflowers, modeling creme stenciled, and cute hearts colored and covered in glossy accents. For the stamps I used one of the Smitten Moustache Monsters (the little hearts came from there also), caged bird & sunflower. Waiting on spring but it is no where in sight!

DLP #3 with Canvas Corp

In this challenge I tried to stay within parameters. I wanted to use 7Gypsies and Tattered Angels products only. It wasn't hard as I love these products. Check out Documented Life Project to play along. Here are the prompts for the week of Jan.17th.

Art Challenge:  The Color Wheel
Journal Prompt:  "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way . . . “    - Georgia O’Keeffe

I started my page by covering it in gesso with an old gift card, adding some texture in as I scraped it on. Once dry adhere some 7Gypsies tissue paper to the background. To complete the challenge, "The Color Wheel" I approached this a little differently using colors that are next to each other on the wheel.
All the products I am using are still available online or from Tuesday Morning. Some through Amazon, Inspiration Emporium, Etsy or directly from the Canvas Corp site.

At this point I grabbed one of my favorite products in the world- Glimmer Glam. This is a translucent glaze type color that has glitter in it. Be sure to shake the paint to get the glitter to mix. I pour some in the cap and swirl as I use the color, otherwise the glitter sinks to the bottom of the bottle. I slopped my product on the page using a paint brush and blended in with my fingers- very messy but effective.
Now I had my shimmery, glimmery, background. Photos don't do it justice. I added some random stamps using archival ink. Taking a lime colored bath pouf (who knew that's what they are called), or bath mesh sponge, I cut a piece out of it for a cool net look. Bonus it smells good from the soap. I layered the tickets on top, 7Gypsies does tags & ephemera well with their packs of fun. A bit of sewing adds interest & texture. The Gypsy piece was turned into a pocket for a mini tag that has journaling on it.

Next came the quote which was colored with a marker. I grew up with the paintings of Georgia O'Keefe as she was one of my mothers favorite artists. So this quote is very appropriate. To finish of the page, a technique I love & have used a lot recently is to add super heavy gesso and colorize it. Taking Donna Downey's Inspiration Wednesday has renewed my love of all things art journal. What are you working on today?
