Hello Fans of Eileen Hull, today is the day for my tutorial of the Scrapbook.com (SBC) release!! These dies are only available at SBC. It was an honor to be able to create with these new die cuts. My project is a mixed media book using Eileen's new Field Notes die by Sizzix with the Starlit Village & Card Panel on the cover. A great way to use die cuts as dimensional item on surfaces. Keep reading as I will show some of the inside pages as well using the other new release sets. A full look at my journal, the shine on this in real life is awesome! You can see here that I added some hardware for my closure. Tim Holtz Hook Clasp would do the trick then you can add some charms to the chain with jump rings.
This is the die cut, it has so many awesome features. There are a lot of layering possibilities.
The Cover!
Let's get started. Using a cereal box cut 2 covers with the Field Notes die. Recycling is good! I was able to use the Starlit Village die to cut the cereal box. This took running the die cut back & forth about 4 times. Keep in mind the die won't cut a surface that is much thicker then the die itself. The stars were cut from watercolor paper.
I decided to make my book 2 signatures wide. The great thing about the Field Notes die you can make as many as 5 signatures in a book. Simply trim along the scorelines to make it 2 holes wide. Next step was to add some texture paste using stencils. Set aside to dry. The thing I love about Ranger Texture Paste is it dries in about 10-15 minutes.
Then it was time for some color. Add a layer of Tim Holtz distress sprays & if you like the glimmer look, some mica sprays. When I do this technique I usually test my colors on a scrap piece. Keep in mind spraying on a kraft color surface changes the look of the colors. Keep the same colors in their spots if you need to respray, this helps prevent a muddy look.
This is the back of the album. As the cover dries you can add more color if you need to. I also added some Distress Oxide to brighten up areas, you can see on the finished book the areas that have a milky look are Oxides.
I just love this technique. It is a brilliant one for the covers of books & creates such a dynamic look. Set aside to dry. You want the cover really dry for the next step or you risk damaging the paste areas.
Once the covers are really dry hit the high points with Luster Wax. This brings the metallic shine & also helps the images pop! You can use one color or mix and match to reveal more metallic lusciousness.
Add Super Tape in 1/4" on one cover side of the spine, line up the holes and adhere the spine together. If you are worried about painting outside the spine area use low tack tape to protect the cover. Paint with acrylic paint. I used Distressed in Uncharted Mariner. Let dry.
Let the spine dry really well. Otherwise powder will stick everywhere. Once dry stamp in a few spots & heat emboss. I stuck with the copper look. Stamp & emboss in sections using embossing ink. This helps keep the ink wet for a crisp look. I sewed my signatures in & added beads & charms. That will be another post. This is also a good time to add the Faucet Knob or whatever hardware you want on the cover.
Just a quick peek inside as this post is getting long! Here is one of my inside pages. The post stamp in the top is using the Snail Mail Diecut. Again keep an eye on my other Social Media accounts as I post there more often & a flip through video is coming.
Here is a picture of how that page looks like in the book. My pages are different lengths which adds interest when flipping through.
Another quick page adding this cool tag. Use the tag from the Everyday set & cut out of a mix media paper then put a piece of black card stock behind it. Lots of impact! That is it for today.
